Pineapple Venus

18 December, 2024 – 15 February, 2025

curated by Claire Breukel

The pineapple evokes ideas of tropical vacations while its spiky exterior ensures survival. Pineapple Venus brings together artists from across geographies who activate their creative practice for self-identification and empowered expression in resistance to (mis)conceptions of the “marginalized other.”

Classic creative approaches merge with contemporary popular culture—from the unapologetic challenge of April Bey’s tapestry portrait; to Gonzalo Fuenmayor’s nostalgic yet uncomfortable pineapple dancing shoes; to the melancholic contemplation of Natalie Perkof’s fabric figures. These moments of unabandoned expression are seductive and revealing, simultaneously reflecting personal and sociopolitical contemplations, while giving visual voices to the complexity of people, surroundings, and cultures with which these artists identify.

A percentage of artwork sales will be contributed to NIA Gallery’s social impact partner selected as Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Arfica Mobile Museum providing art education to under-resourced schools.
